The epic love story Ali & Nino by Kurban Said, is one of the most original works of Twentieth Century literature. Ali Khan and Nino Kipiani live in Baku, the cosmopolitan, oil-rich capital of Azerbaijan, which, at the beginning of the twentieth century, is a melting pot of different cultures. Ali is a Muslim, with his warrior ancestors' passion for the desert; and Nino is a Christian Georgian girl with sophisticated European ways. The two have loved each other since childhood and Ali is determined that he will marry Nino, despite their cultural differences, but there is not only the obstacle of their different religions and parental consent to overcome. The First World War breaks out and Baku’s oil becomes the focus of Russia’s vie for power. As the war plays out and control of the Caucuses changes hands, Ali and Nino find themselves swept up in Azerbaijan’s fight for independence.

Celebrating the art of Polaroid photography and great whisky making, Macallan invited the renowned fashion photographer to interpret its Macallan Estate through a series of Polaroid images, the result of which is a series of 1,000 individual and original works by Rankin. "This project is very special to me for two reasons. Firstly, I've been able to come back to the country of my birth and portray its beauty through one of the most ambitious projects I've ever attempted. The second reason is that this collection marks the full stop after Polaroid, as we head into the digital age," said Rankin of the project which, alongside shots of the dedicated craftspeople of the distillery and the Easter Elchies House, features his muse Tuuli. Guests were treated to whisky cocktails specially created from The Macallan fine oak 30-year-old, as well as a host of tasty Scottish inspired canapés; venison with celeriac, rare seared beef with horseradish and game pie.
The Macallan Director – Malts Ken Grier said: “As one of the world’s truly great whiskies, we seek to collaborate with the best photographers in the world. Not just those who have the technical ability, but something more. The Macallan Masters of Photography is about the personal touch; we work with photographers with whom we have a shared passion to create beautiful collectables."
