A MUSICAL JOURNEY OF
HOPE AND INSPIRATION
A MUSICAL JOURNEY OF
HOPE AND INSPIRATION
A PHIX FILM DOCUMENTARY
Directed by Philip Sansom & Inigo Gilmore
This is the inspirational journey of 12 young musicians from some of the toughest slums Uganda, to some of the biggest music stages in the world. It's a story of resilience and hope, carried along by a joyous, foot-stomping celebration of music and life. At the heart of this film: the power of music to change lives and a charity called Brass for Africa.
From the dusty dirt roads of Katwe slum to the paved streets of London and the fields of Cheltenham Festival, we will follow Sumayya, Tadeo, Gilbert, Julius and the Brass For Africa band as they are welcomed into the UK for an experience that will transform their lives forever.
We follow the band as they travel to the UK where they will play at renowned jazz venue Ronnie Scotts; see an orchestra perform for the very first time; they will play with other young musicians from across the UK and meet a range of musical greats. All the time building up to their central performance at the Cheltenham Festival with the Jazz trumpeting legend - Wynton Marsalis.
We plan to be there to capture this incredible story and the life-changing moment where these two journeys meet. We will follow the preparations, rehearsals, and performances. We will hear from the participants about how the music has changed their lives and witness how the music of this group of talented young African musicians inspires people everywhere they go. They will play their classic big brass band piece, adapted pop and rock classics, sensational Jazz and their own specially composed African themed pieces. As part of the Cheltenham performance, pieces like "Kampala!" which was specially composed and "Mandela" an old song written by Abdulla Ibrahim will be performed there.
They will finish with an exhilarating and euphoric performance at Cheltenham festival, and intercutting with the kids back in Uganda singing and playing along as if they are there with them as part of the performance. We will see the hope that has been created and see the teachers empowering the next generation of musicians to follow their dreams. Topowa! Never give up!
Brass For Africa - More info here: http://brassforafrica.org/about-us/
Founded over 10 years ago by airline pilot Jim Trott with the initial donation of 30 rather old and well used brass instruments from his son's junior brass band; Brass for Africa now supports over 1000 children and young people in Uganda and Liberia every week through brass music education and life-skills training. The charity also provides employment opportunities and training for more than 40 African national staff.
Using music as a tool to empower and transform the lives of disadvantaged children and young people, we have identified and measure 8 key attributes associated with learning music, such as self confidence, resilience, grit and perseverance. These attributes are integrated into each music lesson, resulting in transferable life-skills, which can be applied to the participants everyday lives.
